Business in the Environment Award 2002 was sponsored by National Grid.
As a major infrastructure company, we recognise that our network of overhead power lines, underground cables and substations does have an impact on the environment and local communities. We make every effort to minimise that impact, by careful attention to design and operations, but we also support a wide range of environmental initiatives to "put something back" into the wider community.
Forward looking businesses recognise the need to consider the environment and to support the communities in which they have a presence. We hope that this award will inspire companies not just to achieve business excellence in environmental matters but also to share their success with others."
John Scott, Director of Engineering, National Grid

Dr Belinda Howell, Director of Business in the Environment, says:
'The Business in the Environment Award highlights the inspirational work being undertaken by companies committed to improving their impact on the environment. At a time when the impact of business on the environment is under increasing scrutiny it is crucial that companies demonstrating responsibility in this area receive the recognition they deserve. The entries for the award show how many successful companies place environmental responsibility at the heart of what they do. The real power of the awards lies in what we all learn from their example.'
