3M uK plc Business in the Enviroment Award
* Synopsis

3M's novel approach to the environment was a natural extension to an already ingrained ethos of innovation.

.? In 1975, it was the first major manufacturing company to proactively address environmental issues.
.? As with the drive for innovation, there were direct commercial benefits and all employees were encouraged to be involved through the voluntary programme Pollution Prevention Pays (3Ps).
.? The link between innovation and environmental performance has recently been strengthened through the company's Life Cycle Management (LCM) programme.
.? LCM is about considering environmental, health and safety opportunities and issues for all stages of a product's life cycle. For 3M, this can deliver enormous environmental benefits because of the commitment to new product development - with a target of 40% of sales from products new in the last four years.
.? Preventing pollution at source has already fundamentally changed the UK operation with environmental and business benefits.

3M's approach to eliminating pollution at source has had significant impact in the UK over the last 10 years:

.? Air emissions cut by 97%
.? Waste generated cut by 33%
.? Energy consumption reduced by 25%
.? Solid waste generated reduced by 33%
*
.? What differentiates 3M's approach from that of any other UK organisation is that because of the innovation ethos, all employees are empowered to make a difference.
*
.? Individuals are encouraged to generate ideas for new products, process improvements and environmental improvements.

Project details:

Background to project:

.? Since the first breakthrough in 1921 with a new waterproof sandpaper, 3M has been driven by innovation, technology and new product development.
.? One of the most diverse companies in the world, 3M manufactures and markets 50,000 products, across 34 technology platforms in 200 different countries around the globe.
.? The company's consistent track record of innovation during the last century, leading to the creation of new technology platforms, such as microreplication and reclosable fasteners, has earned accolades such as "ideas factory" and "the most innovative company in the world".
.? Two UK employees who have seen their ideas become commercial reality recently are:
?
.? Des Curran, senior engineering specialist, 3M Aycliffe - genesis face mask
.? Steve Joseph, product development engineer, 3M Atherstone - paint preparation system
.? LCM and 3Ps fit with the holistic approach to sustainable development, which is integrated with the concept of eco-efficiency. This means applying more intelligence to produce higher-value products with fewer resources and fewer environmental impacts.
